The cost of air travel these days includes a lot more than the price of airfare. As airlines continue to add fees for everything from checked luggage to blankets and pillows, the following information will show what carriers are charging for specific services and courtesy perks.
The fee tables shown here do not include every airline fee and may not always be 100% accurate as the airlines make changes. Airline fees can also vary by specific flight, seat class, and frequent flier status.
Baggage fees
The fees for checked bags are now delineated by the number of bags, larger bags, and overweight bags. You can now expect to pay extra for:
- First checked bag
- Second checked bag
- Additional bags
- Large bags (‘oversized’ varies by airline)
- Overweight bags (usually anything over 50 lbs)
Reservation Fees
The airlines have begun assessing a number of fees when you make a reservation (a booking). You can now expect to pay extra for:
- Making a reservation over the phone or in person
- Requesting a particular seat
- Perks like priority boarding or extra legroom
- Changing your flight (online or by phone)
In-flight fees
Airlines are now charging for all sorts of in-flight items. You can now expect to pay extra for:
- Alcoholic and non alcoholic beverages, including soft drinks and juice
- Standard-issue blankets and pillows (some only offer for-purchase sleep sets)
- Pets in carriers – even if they travel with you in the cabin
- Unaccompanied minors (usually 5-14)
