How to budget food for trip to Disney

February 27, 2010 By Damian Tysdal

The Sleeping Beauty CastleWith the Christmas season just around the corner, many families will be going on vacations and spending a few days in Disneyland in California or Disney World in Florida will be high on some people’s list. If you are going to Disneyland or Disney World, you should have made all the necessary preparations by now, securing bookings for the air tickets and the hotel rooms, even down to travel insurance. Yet, there’s one more thing to consider and that’s budgeting for food.

Depending on the size of your party, the duration of your holiday, and the kind of dining you desire, your spending on food can vary some bit. For the purpose of this discussion, let’s assume that you have a party of 2 adults and 3 children and you plan to spend 3 days, which gives you plenty of time to indulge in all the Disney magic. For 3 days, you will have to budget for 3 breakfasts, 3 lunches, and 3 dinners, which comes up to 9 meals, excluding snacks.

For breakfast, you can grab some muffins, sandwiches, or croissants with some coffee or juice for the children. Be prepared to spend about $6 per person so it will be $30 for your party and $90 for 3 days. In Disneyland as well as Disney World, there are lots of dining options. Surely, the kids will be thrilled to dine with their favorite Disney characters so you should put in a Character Dining during one of the days. Here, prices can vary greatly. For instance, Chef Mickey’s Buffet breakfast is priced at $22.99 for adults and $12.99 for kids. For lunch at Cinderella’s Royal Table, it costs $33.99 for adults and $22.99 for children. Other than that, you can have buffet brunch for about $15 per adult and $10 for children at various locations. Accounting for one Character Dining and two normal lunches, expect to spend about $300 for lunches in the parks.

For dinner, there are also many dining options and you can spend anywhere from $5 sandwiches to $15 entrees to $18 buffets to $50 elaborate dinners. If you mix it around, you should budget about $300 for 3 dinners. Also, you will have to consider the matter of water because the children will ask for it many times, and drinks are not cheap in Disneyland or Disney World. You also have to buy water for your lunches and dinners so let’s put it at $150 for 3 days.

Now, to cover all the meals, it will be a grand total of $840 for your party.

Now that you have an idea about how to budget for your trip to Disneyland or Disney World, it will be a good idea to get a singe trip travel insurance to cover for emergencies.
