Does Travel Medical Insurance Cover Food Poisoning?

November 4, 2010 By Damian Tysdal

food-poisoning-chinaSome avoidable incidents can cause distress and discomfort throughout your trip, and they may even force you to curtail your vacation. Unplanned incidents can result in significant financial loss. Therefore, you should make sure that you are insured before you embark on your vacation. A good travel insurance plan can help to provide coverage and stability when traveling abroad.

When you are traveling in abroad, you have to be able to adapt to certain unfamiliar conditions. If the country that you are visiting has a different climate, you may not feel comfortable and you may even become ill. Different countries also have different standards of living, and you may have trouble adapting to different living conditions if you are in an undeveloped country. One of the things that you should be extra careful about when you are in a foreign country is the food. Some countries have very low standards of hygiene, and certain foods in these countries are not exactly safe for consumption. It is common for vacationers to get food poisoning when they are traveling in undeveloped countries, and it is recommended that you do not purchase food from street hawkers and places that are unhygienic.

In the event that you get food poisoning, you will have to get medical treatment at a clinic or hospital. Depending on which country you are traveling to and the severity of the illness, the medical costs may be very affordable or surprisingly high. If you suffer from severe food poisoning, the doctor may recommend that you stay in a hospital for a few days or a week, and your medical bills may add up to thousands of dollars. With travel medical insurance, you do not have to use your hard-earned savings to pay for your medical treatment, because you can get financial compensation from your insurance provider. You should purchase a travel medical insurance plan that offers a higher amount of compensation for medical expenses, so that you will get complete reimbursement if you fall ill during your trip. Some travel policies only pay partial compensation, which means that you have to pay a significant portion of your medical bills with your own money.

A travel insurance policy does not only provide compensation for medical fees; it also enables you to recover your lost travel investment. If you have to cut short your holiday because of food poisoning, you will get back a portion of your prepaid travel expenses.
