Does Travel Medical Insurance Cover Emergency Surgery?

November 4, 2010 By Damian Tysdal

travel-medical-insurance-emergency-surgeryPeople tend to be more adventurous when they are on a vacation, and they may want to take part in risky activities. There are a number of sports and outdoor activities that expose people to higher risk of injuries, and these include skiing, scuba diving, rock climbing, mountaineering, skydiving, bungee jumping, and others. No matter how careful a person tries to be, accidents can happen while he or she is doing one of these activities. The consequences that result from an accident can range from minor scratches to fatality.

When travelers meet with serious accidents during their travels, it is likely that they will need medical attention. If they fracture their limbs or sustain a very deep cut, and they will have to seek emergency medical treatment. Hospitals in some countries charge very high medical fees, and travelers who need to undergo surgery may find themselves in great financial trouble. Surgery for fractures in these countries can cost as much as tens of thousands of dollars and some people may not have the means to pay for it. This is the reason why it is important for travelers to buy insurance before they go on a vacation.

A travel medical insurance plan will give you partial or full financial protection against losses that result from accidents. A standard policy does not only cover emergency surgery and other medical expenses; it also offers reimbursement for emergency rescue services, which is absolutely necessary if you are so badly injured that you cannot make your way to the nearest medical facility. The extent of coverage that is offered varies from one travel plan to another. It is recommended that you spend a little more money to get a good policy, because a cheap travel insurance may not give you adequate protection against serious accidents. If you decide to buy a low-quality travel insurance policy and you become injured in an accident, you may have to pay a large part of your medical bills with your own money.

One thing you have to know is that most standard travel plans do not cover high-risk activities. If you are going to do such activities, you may have to pay extra to add high-risk activity coverage to your policy. Most travel insurance companies offer this type of coverage as an option.
