Do US citizens need passport to travel to Puerto Rico?

April 12, 2010 By Damian Tysdal

us-citizens-passport-puerto-ricoPuerto Rico is a beautiful country with a lot of culture, lush mountains, and sandy beaches. Millions of visitors come to Puerto Rico each year for a visit, but there are certain requirements if you plan to go there. Since Puerto Rico is considered a part of US territory, citizens of the United States are not required to carry a passport.

Visitors from any other outside country or territory must provide a valid passport upon entering Puerto Rico. US citizens do need to provide some kind of proof of identification such as: a valid driver’s license or birth certificate. When traveling in Puerto Rico, a good travel insurance policy is highly recommended. This will help to protect you and your family in the event of a delayed flight, lost luggage, or misplaced items. Some policies also cover medical expenses in the event of an injury or unforeseen illness. Be sure to know what kinds of items you can bring along on your trip to Puerto Rico. Your travel agent should be able to assist you with the current policies and procedures that are in place for entering the country, so check with them for any updates.

Upon arrival, customs will check your luggage to make sure there are no illegal items being brought into the country. You will also be asked to show some form of identification: it does not have to be a passport if you’re a US citizen. Some items that are prohibited from being brought into Puerto Rico include: any live plants or animals as well as certain fruits and vegetables. If you are caught with any of these items, you will be fined immediately. In some cases, you can also be denied entry into the country completely. Be sure to check the current rules and regulations when traveling to Puerto Rico beforehand so you know what you can and cannot bring with you. Policies can change very rapidly; check with the US Embassy or the Department of Homeland Security if you have any questions. Currently, all American citizens do not need a passport to enter the country, which makes traveling to and from much easier. Be sure to remember to bring your travel insurance documentation with you, along with other essentials such as prescription medication, sunscreen, and plenty of clothes. Puerto Rico is a wonderful place to visit and experience, so enjoy your stay!
