What to bring on a road trip

February 25, 2010 By Damian Tysdal

Rain in the desert, Arizona near the Black MesaA road trip is a great way to see the country and spend some quality time with your family or friends. Traveling by vehicle is still the number one way that Americans prefer to travel. If you’re planning a road trip, there are several things that you should remember to bring along.

First, consider the safety of your vehicle and make sure that all four tires are at the correct pressure and check the tread. Windshield wipers should be clean and in good condition in case you run into some rain or other inclement weather. A safety kit is definitely a must for any road trip. The kit should include small orange cones or flares so you can mark off where you are on the side of the road and alert other motorists. The kit should also contain an air compressor, tire jack, jumper cables, flashlight and batteries, and a couple of different sized screwdrivers. These simple essentials can be real lifesavers if you have a flat tire or need to pull over for any reason. A raincoat can also come in handy, and do not forget to bring blankets and pillows.

If you plant to take a long road trip, travel insurance is recommended. Be sure to bring along all of the vehicle’s documentation including the registration and of course, your driver’s license. A single trip travel insurance policy can come in handy in the event of loss or damages. Find out which policies will fit your needs best. Safety should always be a priority when planning a road trip since the unexpected can often occur. Of course, do not forget to bring along a cooler with some cold drinks, and food for both meals and snacking. If the kids are coming along on the trip, games like crossword puzzles, word searches, and handheld gaming devices will make the voyage less stressful and much more fun. Bring a video camera to document the trip and take footage of landmarks along the way. Some DVD’s are also a good idea if your vehicle has a built in DVD player.

Make a list of all necessities as well as fun things to do for your road trip in advance so you do not leave anything out. If you are well equipped, you will have an enjoyable and safe trip that should provide some wonderful memories.
