New Feature: “Ask Travel Guard” FAQs
More about Travel Guard Insurance
Travel Guard, an industry leader of travel insurance plans, offers a range of travel insurance plans designed to cover U.S. Many work reasons, such as layoffs, required to work, direct involvement in a merger or product recall, business rendered unable to open due to burglary or natural disaster, revoked leave (civil and military), are covered reasons for trip cancellation in many (but not all) Travel Guard plans.
When certain plans are purchased within 15 days of your initial trip deposit, they include the popular pre-existing condition waiver, flight guard AD&D, and financial default for common carriers. Some Travel Guard plans have shorter look-back periods – 90 days – as opposed to the typical 180 days.
While Travel Guard has a plan for just about every type of traveler, several plans are designed for specific types of travelers: golf travelers, adventure travelers, and sports travelers. These plans offer benefits not found in other plans. For example, Travel Guard’s Tee, Tour, and Travel plan is designed with the golf enthusiast in mind. It provides reimbursement for a ‘hole-in-one’ celebration, reimbursement for non refundable fees such as greens fees, caddy fees, etc. if you have to cancel or if the course is closed due to inclement weather.
Travel Guard package plans do not typically have age restrictions, although some coverage limits within the plans are reduced for travelers over age 70.
Optional Coverage Available in Travel Guard Plans
- Flight guard AD&D
- 24-hour AD&D
- Car rental collision coverage
- ‘Cancel for any reason’ when purchased within 15 days of initial trip deposit
- ‘Cancel for work reasons’ when purchased within 15 days of initial trip deposit
- Additional medical coverage (includes hospital of choice) that waives the deductible (if applied) and increases the plan limits
- Additional baggage coverage for sports equipment
- Upgrade for adventure sports coverage
Highlights of Travel Guard Insurance
- Travel Guard plans come with enhanced travel assistance services that are unique in the industry and managed by Travel Guard, not a third-party company
- Travel Guard package plans include trip cancellation for common work reasons, such as termination, required to work, leave revoked, military deployments, and more.
- Medical evacuations to the hospital of your choice included in many plans.
- Several plans provide coverage for children up to age 17 at no additional cost.

Scum of the earth – use our tax dollars to line your pockets. Thanks AIG Travel Guard!
K | Mar 19, 2009
Let’s see – they pay travel agents 50% commission per policy and AIG reports a fourth quarter $60 BILLION + loss… How can they afford that? Oh! That’s right – with our tax dollars! Classy company…
LH | Apr 2, 2009
We had experience with a person who carried this insurance. They had a dental emergency. The dental office waited EIGHT MONTHS to get paid. The company was contacted many times – they always had an excuse. After giving them one more week and threatening to report them, a check was finally received. Forget them!

Travel Guard came through in the clutch when my mother-in-law developed heart problems when my wife and I were on a cruise in 2005. They got us home, reimbursed us for the unused portion of our trip and totally held our hands through the entire process. I can’t say enough about the assistance and customer service we received from this company.
mark | Apr 29, 2009
They screwed me out of $291.40. I called their rep on the day of cancellation with no help. I filed their claim to all their specifications to have them say that I rescheduled the trip instead of canceling the trip. They paid the $100 reschedule fee but not the increased ticket price. I will never use Travel guard again. They will find a way not to pay a claim.

This is an extremely sleazy company. I will not do business with them again and will tell everyone I know the same!
We purchased insurance on two tickets we bought with 100,000 miles. They screwed us out of all if it, saying that the medical condition I had was pre-existing because I had recently been pregnant. I had been recently pregnant, but I developed some very bad (separate) health problems after losing the pregnancy and after buying the tickets and related insurance.
When the arbitrator finally called me back, she was entirely unsympathetic. I was told I could file an appeal, but SHE would be the one to review it and HER decision is final! Great appeals process.
Like I said, please don’t do business with these people. They are unscrupulous. I wish I had researched them before buying the insurance.
Traveler | May 21, 2009
Very poor service if you make a claim. Excellent service in taking your money! They will give you every excuse in the book on why they are not able to provide service in paying a claim. They are an AIG company, does that tell you anything? Not a company to be trusted. Just like everyone else says…avoid this company!

I had a great experience with them when my husband and I needed a doctor on our trip to Spain. We got into a car accident so I called travel Guard and they hooked us up with a great hospital and one of their reps actually communicated to the doctors in Spanish— taking out a huge stressor for us. We were reimbursed quickly for the medical expenses too… which amounted to $800!
Alexi | Jun 10, 2009
That surprises me. Did you ask for a mgr to talk to. I was supposed to take a safari vacation in Africa and and had to cancel at the last minute b/c my father was in the hospital. They were really helpful. Actually, they sent me a check for my trip In the mail with in a week! $2,000 – I was actually very impressed .

Our many thanks to agent Stephanie Burclaw for going to bat for us in a sticky situation with Continental Airlines. After canceling our flight to Florida from Bangor Maine, they offered only a $260.00 refund for tickets that would cost us over $585.00 apiece from Portland, Me. She managed to procured tickets from Portland and a voucher to stay overnight the evening before the flight. She went out of her way to make life a little easier for two grateful seniors!
James Leffler | Jul 27, 2009
Very poor service. I faxed claim six weeks ago and received no response. They do not provide you with a phone number for individual inquiries on claims on the claim forms. Now tell me their fax has not worked for the last couple of weeks and I need to submit everything by mail, and essentially begin the claims process from step one.

I usually use Travel Guard health coverage for international and US travel. I have had good luck with claims in the US. While in Japan however, I became ill and needed to see a doctor. I called Travel Guard to get guidance on where to go, they gave me two options and I chose one. I went to the hospital and was treated by a doctor who spoke English. Keeping all receipts and documents, I went about my business and finally returned home. Filing the claim, submitting all documents was easy. Then the company emailed and sent a letter asking for a document that apparantly was not included. I was now home in the US, had no other documentation, and the paperwork was all in Kanji – Japanese! Though I’ve explained that to the company, twice, they insist that I submit that document. Well, the claim has not been paid and I am switching to another carrier. It was fun while it lasted, Travel Guard, but this is rediculous!

We purchased an insurance from Travel guard when we went on cruise to Bahamas. They said they will pay up to 150% if ever we will have problems with our travel. Thats what we thought until my wife got sick and tested positive on flu and suddenly we are confined on our stateroom and make us wore a masked.Anyways we called in travel guard insurance and let them know what happened and they told us not to worry they will take care of us.We are advice to be isolated in Florida for 14 days!! and the cruise line got us a reservation in a hotel with no room service.what are we gonna do?not eating while staying 14 days?so we decided to drove back home and be isolated on our very own home. Again Travel Guard told us not to worry with expense just keep the records and send it with the claim. We filed May 15,2009 and until now September 17,2009 on going process. WE WILL NEVER BUY TRAVEL INSURANCE FROM THEM AGAIN!!!!

Is there a lower than a 1. This company sinks. I have faxed and call over 16 times. I just want my $160.00 back from trip. I have filed everyting they have ask got ok form fax but they just want more. My motner died and they want want dr report. ANYONE who buys insurance from them is nuts. I can’t even get someone important to call me back WHAT A COMPANY.

Wow, this is surprising to us. Our family had an excellent experience with Travel Guard. One of our kids came became ill on our trip to Canada last year and we needed to see a doctor… Travel Guard located a local pediatrician who got her the medication she needed. We were supposed to return home on a flight the next day, but at luck would have it, our flight was cancelled! Again, TravelGuard came to the rescue by coordinating new flight arrangements for us and reimbursing us for all of our meal and hotel expenses in the meantime while we waited to get onto our new flight! This company was a lifesaver!
Tojiddin | Nov 5, 2009
I had TravelGuard travel insurance. When I had to cancel my flight due to orders from the military, they sent me the information and processed my claim quickly, and I got the full refund. Quality service.
gb | Nov 14, 2009
Customer service tells you one thing…the company pays much less. I am out about $4K for lost travel and illness that they refuse to pay. More importantly they won’t tell you why. Save your money and take your chances. The only reason I gave them a 1 instead of 0 is because a rating was require.
Jhoantan | Dec 22, 2009
(sorry my english is not very good) I will not buy any insurance with Travel Guard anymore. I’ve just arrived from LGA New York to Dominican Republic, but in my routing SDQ-LGA I had some bottles packed in my checked luggage… everything was a mess ! Firstly the luggage was delayed in Fort Lauderdale because the routing tape was broken and the airline (Spirit) did not know where to send it. (even seeing I taped one stamp with the travel guard policy) Once I arrived, I called travel guard and they told me to call an agency which is a third party this airline use to deliver delayed baggage, all the clothes was dirty because they throw the bag and broke the rum bottles. My luggage arrived the next day at 5 pm in the Bronx, the delivery agent made two mistakes, firstly made a wrong delivery and re picked it and finally sent to me through a second agency… I made some calls but seems to be avoiding their responsability. Deeply I know my fault is big, but I should have had a better treat.

Dont waste your money. After six months of emails, phone calls and faxes still denied claim for missing our original flight from Atlanta due to delays in customs and security. Had to be picked up at another airport another state. Would not cover for service to pick us up of $200. We still had to pick up our luggage at orginal destination airport the following day..Save your money..just a money making scam.
sylvia | Jan 6, 2010
I used Travel Gaurd insurance when I had to get off a cruise ship in Hawaii. I was told that my return flight home and the missed days on the cruise would be covered. I was misinformed and Travel Gaurd would not stand behind their customer service representative who gave me this information (even thought their calls are recorded and there is a record of this call). In the end I am out $800. What a scam. I will never ever use this service. If you want to keep your money DON’T purchase insurance from Travel Gaurd. There are many options to choose from check out the competition – it can’t be any worse than this!
jeff gordinier | Jan 31, 2010
These shysters refused to cover a cancelled trip to visit a dying friend. When her doctor found out I was having an attack of shingles he said I could not see her. Travel Guard said “Too Bad”. I wouldn’t use these jerks to walk my dog. I informed them I would take them to small claims court and they laughed.

Jan, 2010, we inadvertantly left one of our mission supply bags @ the Manila, PH airport, not discovering it until 4 days later. Contacted TravelGuard agent in the U.S. Arrived Manila airport for return trip several days later, first airport person I saw, and inquired re: location of their unclaimed luggage area. They responded with 2 words, that of the name of the bag I was looking for. Bag retrieved, and supplies not lost. Great job, Travel Guard people!

I booked a cruise in August 09–didn’t get travel insurance…added travel guard in March 2010, set sail on April 5th and on April 7th my grandfather passed away. My return flight alone was 721.00. I filed(by fax) my claim and in less than a month I had a check in hand. The check covered my unused trip and my unexpected flight home. I will never leave home without Travel Guard. Very quick and reasonably priced company!

we purchased a $500 policy for a trip abroad. On the 1st night in Madrid my passport was stolen. We were unable to continue on to Morocco as planned and had to wait in Spain for 5 days for the embassy to reopen to obtain an emergency passport to return to the U.S. we were held responsible for all hotels booked, car/driver, R/T tkt. Spain-Morocco. We supplied an abundance of documentation and received a pittance from Travel Guard after they took a month to ‘review” our records. READ THE SMALL PRINT. I would strongly discourage using this company.
LESLIE DUNN | Jun 13, 2010
I RATE TRAVEL GUARD TOP OF THE LINE. HAVING BEEN A TRAVEL AGENT FOR 23 YEARS I SAW OTHER TRAVEL INSURANCE COMPANIES DENY CLAIMS FOR INCOMPREHENSIBLE REASONS WHEN IN FACT THE REASONS WERE TOTALLY VALID!
I USE TRAVEL GUARD MYSELF …. THIS IS THE ONLY COMPANY I WILL USE. FOR EXAMPLE, I WOULD DO ANYTHING NOT TO HAVE TO FILE A CLAIM BUT I WAS TAKEN VERY ILL AND HAD AN EXPENSIVE AIR TICKET TO LONDON AND A SMALL DEPOSIT ON A HOTEL I HAD TO CANCEL. I ONLY CANCELLED THE AIR TICKET WITH TRAVEL GUARD NOT WANTING THEM TO BOTHER WITH A SMALL HOTEL DEPOSIT. THEY ACTUALLY PAID ME BACK THAT DEPOSIT!!!!! WITHOUT MY ASKING! I WILL NEVER FORGET THAT.
I AM TAKING A EUROPEAN RIVER CRUISE THIS FALL AND WILL, OF COURSE, ONLY USE TRAVEL GUARD, THOUGH THE CRUISE COMPANY IS REQUESTING I USE THEIR INSURANCE. NO WAY!!!!
HAVING TO FIGHT FOR HONEST REIMBURSEMENT WITH A DISHONEST INSURANCE COMPANY WHEN YOU’VE BEEN TAKEN ILL IS HEINOUS!
THANK YOU, TRAVEL GUARD, FOR BEING THE BEST!

I had a legitimate claim which I filed. TG said wait for a month.
They provided not contact information. After 6 weeks I surfed the internet and found one word–denied. NO REASON stated and they did not even inform me. When I called an agent, she transfered me a number–”We are not available.” They can take your premium in a flash but have no intention of ever paying a claim. TG can hide but I will take action.

First off, let me start off by saying that to all the people that are upset with the company I apologize, but everyone knows that sometimes you win and sometimes you lose in insurance. Alot of the stories i hear are about people winning… I know alot of people who DO NOT read thier policy fine print and that’s where they end up hating the company… do you realize alot of those rules are rules placed by insurance commissoners of each state? Any customer knows that they should read the fine print… if the customer service rep read the whole policy with every in and out you would be on the phone for hours before you bought or before you moved on… not practical… that’s why travelguard makes it simple to access that information both online and through and link attatchment in the policy email that they send you. I also know that as the review states above.. you do have a LONG 15 day look back for a refund… so read your policy… buy smart…I can understand that sometimes you can’t provide the documentation and it may be difficult to obtain… but it’s how they pay their claims… again like all other insurance companys…. there needs to be proof.. another point to make is that you cannot make money off of an insurance company, take for example the guy who said he was rescheduling his trip and travelguard denied his claim for cancellation.. he’s still going on his trip why would they pay you for that trip when you just changed the dates.. they gave you back any fees you were charged.. just because you have travel insurance doesn’t mean that you would get a free trip i don’t understand… i didn’t see anywhere in the policies fine print where it covers for “fun” on a trip either… sometimes you have bad luck and it rains your whole trip and other times it’s worse and that’s why travelguard is there… i’ve heard of horrible situations that travelguard got people through and that’s what people should be reading. sure there are downfalls of EVERY company but the good needs to outweigh, and with travelguard i can say without pause, the good DEFINITLY outweights the bad…
Debbie | Jul 9, 2010
Do not purchase this insurance from Travel Guard, as this company will find any reason possible to deny your claim. Do yourself a favor and shop your insurance needs, and do not succumb to buying insurance from this company. Travel Guard will tell you that they deny less than 7% of the claims filed, although they got it backwards, as they approve just 7% of the claims filed, and deny the rest.
Valed | Jul 22, 2010
Very dissapointed, to say the least. We went to a European cruise in May, and got stuck in London for 3 days because of the volcano. We had spent 3K to finally reach the cruise ship (booking and re-booking the flights which have been cancelled, train to paris, plane to monte-carlo). I called the TG when we came home, and ASKED them if our policy covers this. They said YES, just provide the support, including confirmation from the air carrier that the flights were cancelled and any media articles about the event! I put together all the info (we had saved all the tickets): it turned out to be a 35-pages package. And yesterday I got a call from TG saying they don’t cover this because these are additional expenditures, and not the prepaid. I wonder, why did they tell me to do everything? Just to have the claim open? Which will justify their meaningless existence – to show that they have claims and they are working on them?

Travel Guard came to my rescue.
I purchased travel coverage for a 12 day Mediterranean cruise. I wanted to cover my round trip airfare and cruise costs for my wife and I. The policy cost $381 to cover our $9,000 trip costs.
While on our ship (day 6 of 12) we received communications of a immediate family member only had a few days to live from a fast moving cancer that was not known prior to buying the insurance or booking our trip. I immediately contacted Travel Guard and asked them what steps I needed to take. While on the phone I asked to start my claim and was given a claim number with a $0 amount initially. I have up to one year to submit. I told them to mail me all the forms to my home address. We had to make emergency short notice flight back to the US which was a cost above and beyond our original flight costs. We also had a delay that was overnight and had hotel costs, food and taxi costs.
Remember to always use a credit card and also ask for a receipt for anything you want to claim.
Well we made it home but the person died 1 hour before we arrived.
After a few weeks, I gathered all the documents, receipts, airline ticket stubs, letter from the doctor, death certificate for all the costs of the trip as well as the additional costs above and beyond to return to the USA. I numbered each document and indexed them for easy use by the Travel Guard and wrote a short page synopsis of the time line.
Yes it took some work to gather up what they wanted and I sent all the documents via registered receipt received mail. I mailed the documents on July 7, 2010. Checked online after a few days to insure they received the documents and the long list said received. If something was missing it would say so on the list. I did not receive any notification so far by them.
On July 21, 2010 I checked online and it said claim paid with a check number and my amount.
They returned exactly what I asked within a few dollars which was over $4,700.
Thank you Travel Guard for taking care of us in our emergency

My daughter was alone in Africa on vacation. she decided to extend her trip for 2 additional weeks. Travelguard would NOT extend her coverage for another 2 weeks for any price. No other company would insure her because she was already there. So as a result, my daughter had NO coverage for 2 weeks. Make sure you read the small print!!
Jimbo Taylor | Aug 3, 2010
The worst ins. company you could possible deal with. I would recommend another ins. company or go without. The claims process is so labor intensive that they make it impossible to get your claimed process in a timely manor.
Robert Stern | Aug 10, 2010
After many years of using them, and no claims, they have changed their policy. They do not print and send sticker labels to put on suitcases. I believe this is cheap advertising for them AND a possible deterrent to theft. This is a poor decision. I have just cancelled a policy and will go to someone else.
Amos Hockmeyer | Aug 13, 2010
Do not buy from TravelGuard!!! I had a delayed flight that caused me to miss a connection in Malaysia, the travel assistant on the phone was of very little help. When I came up with a better solution she agreed that I should do it, but then Travel Guard ended up denying the claim in the end. Greedy corporation, and very unhelpful. Just try calling to check a claim status…after a couple minutes of navigating through their phone system, you press 2 to check the status of a claim, and ‘click’ they hang up on you!!! Three times in a row. Do yourself a favor and shop elsewhere.
Andy Jones | Aug 13, 2010
They claim to reimburse for all sorts of mishaps….but read the fine print! They will find a way to deny your claim. I would give them less than 1 star if possible.

I have purchased the one year Travel Guard MedEvac insurance for the last few years for the family because of a number of overseas trips by family.
This year I was injured while traveling and required $7,000 of surgery overseas. We notified Travel Guard after an ER visit but prior to surgery the next day. We paid the surgery fee with our credit card. Once home it took several calls (mostly to convince Travel Guard they had all the medical records – there was not much to see). About 7 weeks later they sent a check for the full amount.
The only reason I did not give them 5 stars is because of their repeated requests for more medical records when we had told them a number of times they had everything.

Very terrible service…. Everytime I call they have another excuse… It was for two plane tickets for me and my grandmother… And now she is deceased and they are using that as a reason they can’t pay me the money! Btw… They have all the information they need since 3 months ago.

Visited a dermatologist to remove a mole. Purchased a ticket 17 days after that. In 10 more days got a letter saying that I got CANCER. Called these THIEVES asking whether being diagnosed with cancer three days before the flight is a refund case. I also said, that I had removed a mole, and whether it is a pre-existing condition. The AGENT said “Only the date of DIAGNOSIS matters, so don’t bother to call your airline company”. Now, they refuse to pay saying, I had a preexisting condition… They “took care” of my Continental ticket, which I could make open for a fee of 50 bucks, so that I lost it. Basically, they have stolen my ticket, lied to me on the phone, and called me … on the day of the surgery (this is how they reed the supporting documents). This is SCUM, 100% FRAUD, if this is called business, then why those who rob people in the streets go to jail????????????????

Great service. Six of us traveling together canceled because of an injury to one of the group members. We all received full compensation for our costs. We had the check in hand in less four weeks of sending in the claim forms. The bottom line is we received a settlement of almost $10,000 for a total premium of less than $500. Travel Guard came through for us. I would highly recommend them.

My daughter was recently away and was covered by Travel Guard. Child got an ear infection and they couldn’t fly. She leaarned from previous experience that you can’t seek any medical treatment until you contact them. They still gave her grief wanted her to send in immediatley doctors information. When she told them that she was in Jamaica and this wouldn’t be easy they didn’t care. They also refused to pay for a follow up vist with doctor to OK the child to fly. Don’t use them if you are Canadian use RBC much better and no hassles!!!!!!!!!!!

Our ordeal with this company started August 12, 2010. My husband and I had planned a trip for our one year anniversary to Costa Rica as our honeymoon since we did not really get a honeymoon when we got married. Unfortunately, my husband developed severe gastroenteritis the day before we were scheduled to leave, so we had to cancel the trip. That day, I called Travel Guard, gave the man my information, and asked him what was covered and what I needed to send. He told me that everything, including the flight to Costa Rica, the flight within Costa Rica, and any money we lost on hotel reservations would be covered and to send documentation of what we lost, and that we should have a check within 30 days. So, 27 pages of documentation and 1 day later, I faxed all this information to TravelGuard, relieved that we had purchased the insurance and that our trip would be covered.
Almost 3 weeks later, I received notification that I had not sent them enough information and that my claim could not be processed. Evidently they needed documentation from the airline that we had indeed cancelled the trip, and that we would not be able to exchange the tickets. Ok, fine. So, I sent the information they required that day by fax.
Another 2 ½ weeks goes by, and I call to ask the status of my claim since I have not heard anything from anyone. After 45 minutes and multiple transfers and being told to call different numbers, including transfers to another country, I finally get to someone who has access to look up my claim. They tell me that they will be covering approximately $500. Shocked, I ask what was covered. They tell me that the insurance I purchased only covers the flight and nothing else. Fine, the first man made a mistake in telling me it covered everything even though I was pretty sure that it did since it said it covered everything on your “itinerary”. However, we paid over $725 for the tickets, around $650 if you take out the cost for the insurance. They send it to a claims adjuster to look at it again, and they realize they owe us the additional $150, and send me an email on September 22 that I should be receiving 2 checks and also send me a copy of my policy which, although confusing, I take to mean just the flight was covered. Although I feel I was misled by the wording when I purchased it and by the very first man I spoke to, fine, I will give the company credit on that one. So, according to them, I should be receiving a check within a week or two.
So, I give them 3 weeks before I make another phone call since supposably my claim is now taken care of and all they have to do is mail out a check. Of course, I do not receive anything, so I call again and yet again get transferred and told to call different numbers that don’t work and after another 35 minutes of transfers and being placed on hold, I get to someone who can actually look up my claim. They tell me, again, that I should be receiving my check within a week or two and that they would put a “rush” on it since I have been waiting so long already. Now, how a week “or two” is a rush, I don’t know especially since all they have to do at this point is print a check and send it.
So, would you like to guess what happens? Yup! I waited until today, another 3 weeks, before I made another phone call. And, of course, no matter what I say to the first person I get, I get transferred back and forth and back and forth and put on hold for another 28 minutes before I can get to someone who can even access my claim. So, supposably, my claim check was mailed out yesterday from Texas, and I live in Florida and according to them, it should arrive within a week. I’ll give them two before I make a phone call again, since they can’t control the mail. Really, I’m skeptical that it was ever even sent. However, I will NEVER do business with them again, and I will review them every chance I get so that people do not get scammed and frustrated like I did.

Our trip to Europe was delayed 24 hours. We missed one day and night of our paid escorted tour. We had taken our travel guard insurance but were not reimbursed for any of our missed tour. I do not recommend travel guard to anyone.

Travel Guard rejected my insurance claim to stay home and take care of my sick newborn son, (1 week old) because he did not have a defined sickness that could be explained in a medical code. My business flight claim was rejected. Would you leave your newborn son home while he can’t eat or sleep, for a business trip? Travel Guard Insurance does not care about actual emergencies, if it does not fall within their acceptable claim codes they will reject your claim. Most other insurance companies care about the whole body of work as to why you could not fly or continue with your vacation, Travel Guard is only concerned with staying within their flawed and narrow minded claims process. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that NO ONE use Travel Guard!!!

I highly recommend Travel Guard. Originally, I wasn’t sure that I needed travel insurance for my trip to Germany, but I decided to purchase it “just in case.” Boy, was I glad I did. First of all, it was the middle of winter, and living in Minnesota, we experienced a huge snow storm before I was to leave. Most flights were cancelled, including mine. Travel Guard went to work on my behalf to re-book flight tickets for the next flight out. Since I was late arriving in Germany, they reimbursed me for the cost of the hotel since I wasn’t there to stay in it. Towards the end of my trip I felt ill- food poisoning… just great. Luckily, Travel Guard once again stepped in to save the day. They covered medical expeses after I saw a doctor and even coordinated the medical care with a German-speaking representative. I’d check them out.

Amazing! I was just reading the other reviews, many of which were negative. As soon as I finished we received a call from Travel Guard informing us they were denying our claim. We had to cancell our trip because My wifes knee locked up, requiring total knee replacement surgery. Because she was treated for this condition 180 days prior to purchasing the insurance, it was considered “pre-existing” I asked if there was an appeal process. They said only if the condition was a “new” condition. So to all of you who have a medical problem, and you were treated for it 6 months before buying travel insurance, beware if you try to make a claim if the condition causes travel cancellation. Insurance companies are not your friend. They will do whatever it takes to deny a claim so they can turn a profit. Did I add that all required documents were sent on Sept. 23rd, and today is Dec. 6th? How does this company get a 4 star rating? There simply is NOTHING good to say about Travel Guard.

I had my elderly parents purchase travel guard insurance before they made their trip to my home for the holidays. I felt that since they are almost 90 and are at higher risk for illness during travel. Two and a half weeks into their vacation my mother fell, and also developed bronchitis. I was advised by the airline to call the claim into the insurance company. I called travel guard and spoke with Chad. Chad handled the entire claim efficiently. He even followed up after I spoke with the airline to make sure everything was squared away. Ever agent I spoke with were very efficient and professional. I also spoke with Jessica, who assisted me with medical claims forms, and contacted the airline to expedite our receiving the flight confirmation e-mail I had not received. I also read the negative feedback on this website and thought we might have problems. I would use Travel Guard again and would recommend it highly!!!

I bought TravelGuard insurance for a cruise from Venice in April of 2010. The Iceland volcano blew while we were on the cruise. Needless to say, our flight home was cancelled and flights for days after didn’t fly back home. Trains were booked, hotels were booked. We finally got home and filed a claim with TravelGuard. It is now January of 2011 and they are still processing a relatively small claim. I’ll update when the claim is finally settled. But, gentle reader, don’t hold your breath!

Excellent experience and will not travel overseas without this insurance. My mother began to suffer heart failure during our Caribbean cruise. We were taken by leer jet from one of the islands, accompanied by a physician and nurse back to Miami and then transported by ambulance to the hospital. My mother was in the hospital for 5 days and then we were accompanied by a nurse back to California. If we had to pay for this we would have been wiped out financially. AIG Travel Guard was wonderful to deal with and the people who they hired to serve their clients were excellent. I cannot say enough good things about them.
Diane | Feb 17, 2011
What a scam! I will never use this company again and wish that I had read these reviews before purchasing my policy. I had a legitimate claim: my flight was delayed, causing me to miss my connecting flight – I needed to purchase a flight on another airline. Travel Guard would not recognize my claim and refused to pay for my flight. Buyer beware! If I could give 0 stars, I would.
J Johnson | Feb 21, 2011
Do not buy this “insurance”. It is worthless. The fine print rules out claims payments for almost every reason you might need travel insurance. The personnel on the phone were evasive and would not directly answer questions. Only bought this once, will never buy it again.

My father in law came in to the united states with a “gold” insurance. unfortunately 3 months in his stay, he has terrible headaches and necessitated an Emergency visit. In the ER , they had to admit him and do a radiological procedure on the vessels of his brain. He was cured. we were left with a potential bill.
Voila, Travelguard insurance India came in handy. All we paid was the deductible of 100 dollars, the rest the inusrance company paid.
We were relvd. We never expected that Travel guard will do all this with minimum hassels. They were professional and good on the fone and got things done. I would highly recommend this service after this experience with them.

Would rate less than 1 star if possible. Terrible experience with this travel insurer when one of our party became ill with “a touch of pnemonia” while on a cruise. Cruise line actually forced ill party and one traveling companion off the ship as soon as we docked at the next port (which happened to be the only non-US port on our itinerery), saying they didn’t have adequate facilities to care for her, which was ridiculous since they had a fully staffed and equipped mini-hospital on board. Sick passenger was met at the port by an ambulance, transported to a local hospital, and admitted under orders from the ship doctor. The travel companion was dropped at a hotel on the other side of town. Prior to disembarking the ship, the cruise line required payment in full for the medical services rendered on the ship.
The next five days were a total nightmare. No one, not the cruise line, the travel insurer or the foreign hospital personnel, wanted to take responisbility for the patient. She lay virtually unattended in the hospital while the three parties (Travel Guard, the cruise line and the hospital administrators) each fought to divest themselves of any responsiblity for her. The only way to get the sick party home was to have her check herself out of the hospital, then return home with the travel companion, on flights she booked for them directly.
The battle to collect on the claim continues with Travel Guard. They’ve used every trick in the book to avoid paying the claim for more than a year now, particularly the travel companion expenses. AVOID!
Unsatisfied | Mar 31, 2011
Be aware, you may not get anything in case of medical expenses because most of the health insurance plans cover you out of the country subject to very high deductible. Travel Guard does not pay for your deductible. This is a quot from Travel Guard SCHEDULE OF BENEFITS FOR BASE PLAN http://content.travelguard.com/adx/aspx/adxGetMedia.aspx?DocID=4299
“the Insurer shall be liable only for the excess of the amount of
Loss, over the amount of such other insurance or indemnity, and

Booked a cruise through Delta’s Skymiles’ Cruises and also paid for round trip flights to the cruise port. The flights were insured by Access America, and the cruise, by Travel Guard.
Two days later, my wife was laid-off from her job and I talked with both companies about being re-imbursed for needing to cancel the trip. Access America said they will cover the cancelation. Travel Guard, said that they won’t due to an exclusion for “Changes in financial situation” even though their ‘come-on’ implies that they will cover unforeseen events of just about any type. Unfortunately, even reading the fine print is no guarantee that you’ll actually understand what their policy really covers. I recommend a Harvard Law degree and several hours to review their policy before you agree to anything with them.
It’s interesting that Delta would offer up such conflicting insurance policies under their Skymiles brand. It certainly doesn’t reflect well on them. Not only will I not waste my money on any more insurance scams, but I will never book anything through Delta again.
As they say, ‘buyer beware.’ Snake oil salesmen are everywhere these days. And the companies you used to think were honorable, have become way less so.
KZ | Apr 30, 2011
They were very slow to process a claim and used many excuses to delay the process. When they finally processed the claim, they sent less than I requested with no explanation of the reason for the difference. There are also many vague exclusions. Reading the policy is helpful, but the exclusions are so vague that you can expect that they will be used if it is possible to do so. At the very least they will delay the claim settlement while the discussion goes on and on.
Also, note that agents are in general worhtless — they claim to be helpful, but they were no no use in our situation — they simply read the policy back to us. They claim they are on your side, but they are really working for the company.
BEWARE!!

Perhaps a great insurance until you file claim. Gave us the runaround over a claim for $100 bill, demanding all sorts of personal medical information that required hours of phonecalls and letters. In the end – and six months after filing the initial claim – they rejected the claim over a technicality. NEVER AGAIN – GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!!

My sister and I traveled to N.Y. We purchased this insurance Policy # 910684264 for the sole purpose of if our baggage was lost/delayed or we missed our flight, BOTH of which happened. We were led to believe that we would be reimbursed the amount listed: baggage delay $300 PER INSURED, LOSS OF BAGGAGE $1,000 PER INSURED, MISSED CONNECTION $250 PER INSURED, TRIP INTERUPTION/RETURN AIR 750 PER INSURED. We sat on the first plane for well over 2 hours before they decided the plane was not going to fly. The plane was totally full and everyone was running to the ticket counter to try to get other arrangements. I was in line for well over an hour trying to get home. NO such luck. They finally got us another plane that landed in Dallas at 1 a.m. I had NO luggage, had to sleep in the clothes that I had worn ALL day. I called and talked to two of your representatives, both of which were incredibly rude and pretty much said I could have bought new clothes? Where am I going to dind these at 1 a.m. in a cith I know NOTHING about? Then, when I finally DO get to my destination THE NEXT DAY!! NO luggage. It’s still in Dallas. (I was supposed to fly from LaGuardia to Dallas and then to Fresno Ca,) I have had 2 heart attacks and al my meds were in my luggage as I ASSUMED they would be in Fresno when I landed and I take them at bed time. All your representitive could say was “did you see a doctor”? I simply can NOT believe that your company can, in good conscience take money (scam) from people who totally believe that there are HONEST companies! I feel that I should, at LEAST get a FULL refund for the policy thet I purchased that stated NONE of what your representatives said was covered. (NOTHING)!!! When I got home I read other reviews of your company and they all said that your company sounds great on paper, but goes out of their way to NOT pay claims!!! I will NEVER EVER use this company again, and I will tell any one else the horror story that I had associated with usisng your company. You should be ASHAMED of yourselves!!!!!! Ever heard of Karma??? I hope you all get yours! Shame on ALL of you all the way from the top, to your representatives, to the travel agents who sell your policies! I paid a total of $197.00 and this is what you OWE me!! I am going to look into small claims court action on this matter. The paper I have lists what is covered. Of course it does not metntion all the ways you GET OUT of paying! Again…..shame on you!

My husband and I had a cancel a trip to the Dominican Republic due to the fact that we had a very sick pet whom we consider to be a family member. Even though I have well documented doctor and emergency room bills and receipts, they would not even consider reimbursing us for over $2000 worth of tickets. Pets are not listed on their list of “exclusions”. I will never use this company again – these are the kind of emergencies that people can’t predict. I would never leave my sick pet with a friend or relative to be responsible for while I’m off trying to enjoy a vacation! This policy needs to be clearly stated or I should be reimbursed for the cost of the insurance. As far as I am concerned, it was worthless.

Do not make the mistake that I did and purchase Travel Guard for any trip. I bought a Travel Guard policy for a trip to Costa Rica. While on this trip, my brand new Macbook was stolen, a $1500 value. I filed a claim with Travel Guard, knowing that I could only expect $500, but grateful for even that amount back. After pages of paperwork and three months of waiting, I learned that my claim was denied because my husband’s name was on the police report. I had explained that my husband’s name appeared on the report because he had to file the report on my behalf as I do not speak Spanish; I had the original receipt and other paperwork proving that it was indeed my possession that was stolen. Travel Guard not only deined the claim, but they are impossible to contact. The number that supposedly gues to their arbitration department gues straight to a recording. I am now considering filing a lawsuit. If you’re considering travel insurance, do yourself a favor and don’t purchase a policy from this company.
John Young | Aug 11, 2011
Absolutely abysmal claims processing. Asking to provide a copy of my insurance certificate and proof of payment for it when they clearly know I’m already insured and paid for the policy. Providing original medical receipts wasn’t acceptable I also had to prove I’d actually paid the bills with credit card receipts and ATM slips. Then they insisted on checking medical records more than 35 years old to prove I didn’t have a pre-existing condition. They wanted to see my travel itinerary and anything else that they could use to prolong my payment. Took months to process my claim. Absolute total and utter rubbish! Avoid at all cost!
Ed | Aug 22, 2011
No problems filing a medical claim at all for the gold policy. I had to visit a doctor on my trip in Mexico and it cost me a few hundred dollars. I got the insurance more for weather related issues than medical, so when the weather turned out beautiful I thought I wasted my money. Not so, it turned out. I mailed in the paperwork they emailed me and the receipts and got my check in less than 3 weeks. They actually gave me more than I requested because my currency conversion was off. Will definitely use them again.

I wish I could give this company a ZERO, but this is not possible. Please heed all of the reviews below and DO NOT buy this insurance, these people are really scum, as someone pointed out below. They will do everything to screw you out of your money, their insurance claims people and their supervisors are trained in this very well. I purchased a ticket with Spirit Airlines, which got canceled and they would not rebook me on any flight the same day. I had to rebook with Delta for the next day, which cost me $200 more. I had cancellation, trip delay and trip interruption – all supposed to be covered under Travel Guard. They told me I am eligible for NONE of this. I do not get a dime from them. Spirit Airlines already has a bad reputation, unfortunately, that is why I bought this insurance, hoping to protect my trip. The fact that these two scum companies paired together to collect your money and provide no services speaks volumes. I will be complaining about Travel Guard to Better Business Bureau and will use any available recourse to expose them as scam.

I wish I had read all of the negative reviews written below prior to wasting my money on this scam. With people flying in from around the country to meet in Cape Hatteras for a surfing trip, I thought it might be a good idea to insure against loss from a hurricane since they are known to land there. When in fact the island was hit by hurricane Irene, the Representatives at Travel Guard told me I was not insured for money spent on plane tickets or anything other than the house rental. That amounts to about half of the damages sustained and their postion was that I should have bought my tickets through the property rental company if I wanted them covered. Secondly, they informed me that they will not be able to make a determination as to whether or not my claim will be honored until after the scheduled trip is well over. In otherwords, I’ll need to travel there to see if I can or cannot inhabit the rental property for which I am insured and 4 to 6 weeks later, they will let me know if they if they want to live up to their agreement. Oh, and by the way, the rental property cannot be reached as the road has been washed away in several places by the hurricane for which I was insured. What a racket!

THEY TOLD ME THAT MY INSURANCE WAS IN EFFECT THE DAY AND TIME THAT I HAD PURCHASED WITH MY CREDIT CARD, BUT WHEN I CLAIMED FOR IT THEY SAID THAT IT WAS IN EFFECT ONLY DAYS LATER. Purchased 2 round-trip airline tickets from Spirit Airlines in January, 2011 for tickets from Atlantic City to Florida (for a cruise at the end of August.) Also purchased Travel Guard policy at the same time. (Covers Trip Cancellation $300 Per Person, among other things.) Due to Hurricane Irene, Atlantic City was being evacuated. I purchased new tickets on Delta (more than $5 00 for two one-way tickets) and left a day early from Philly instead. Cancelled the first part of the flight on Spirit Airlines (remember, AC was being EVACUATED due to the weather.) Also incurred additional hotel costs. I submitted all of my paperwork, and waited the entire month after I submitted my claim to hear from Travel Guard. They claim they sent me a letter (which I did not receive) stating that my claim is DENIED because the “trip cost” on the policy is blank. (This is a document I received electronically, which is supplied by THEM.) It is is a “default” form, which does not allow any for elections for any other coverage. Here is their definition of “Trip Cost” :
“Trip Cost” means the dollar amount of Trip payments or
deposits reflected on any required enrollment form which
are subject to cancellation penalties or restrictions paid by
the Insured prior to the Insured’s Trip Departure Date. Trip
Cost will also include the cost of any subsequent pre-paid
payments or deposits paid by the Insured for the same Trip,
after enrollment for coverage under the Policy provided the
Insured amends his or her Enrollment Form to add such
subsequent payments or deposits and pays any required
additional plan cost prior to the Insured’s Departure Date.
I paid for the trip with my credit card, so I have proof of costs. So, because THEY (knowingly) did not print this on the form (effectively rendering it “$0.00″), and did not give me the option to choose anything, they can deny my claim? Waiting for a call back from the Analyst (who, “shockingly” was not available to take my call, so I left a message) to explain this to me.
Given the amount of negative posts here, contact with the Attorney General’s Office seems almost guaranteed. Travel Guard recording promises a call back within 24 hours. I will not wait beyond that.

the fist cancellation, they called it a pre existing condition and denied any coverage.Dishonest to the core that is who they are, Buyers be aware of dogs.

I have been waiting to settle a 800 dollar claim for three months. they just keep asking for the same information.
My kid wont have a desent christmas this year , thanks travel gaurd for not paying my claim now i am out cash.
Dont use this for foriegn car rental. Buy the insurance from the car rental agency. If you have a problem its all on them. Dont count on travel gaurd for reinbursment

I’ve traveled for years and sometimes I buy the insurance sometimes I don’t. If I am going outside the US I ALWAYS buy it…try getting your medical insurance to cover you. Good luck! And when I’ve put down a big sum for a cruise, I definitely get it in case I have to cancel. I’ve used Traveguard a few times, and only had to make a claim once, but they covered my cancellation for when I had to stay home because my elderly mother took a turn for the worse — and yes, it was a pre-existing condition and covered. My advise to anyone buying any plan is to understand what you’re covered for. If it’s cheap in cost — buyer beware. Ask the company “what if?” questions. I did that with travelgaurd each time and they were very helpful, and yes, they delivered when I needed them. It’s your responsibility to know what you’re buying. and get it as soon as you buy your trip. Don’t wait or your coverage lacks a few things. Just remember, you get what you pay for!

THEY WILL FIND A LOOP HOLE. IF YOU HAVE ANY EXISTING MEDICAL PROBLEMS. DON’T PLAN ON THEM BEING THERE FOR YOU. SAVE YOUR $$ OR BETTER YET JUST FLUSH IT DOWN THE JOHN.

I do not recommend using travel guard. I was hospitalized and unable make a trip for which I purchased TravelGuard Insurance.n They received a letter from the hospital/treating physician but it was not enough. They want all my medical records dating back over 3 months, an invasion of my privacy at best .

I would never use Travel Guard again. I have used it for several trips: two had premiums of over $1,000.00 for African Safaris. We insured our last trip (a little cruise from Baltimore to Bermuda and return) with Travel Guard. We were traveling on Carnival. Carnival was one day late starting the cruise, so we had an extra night and meals in Baltimore. Our total claim was for $148.00. We could not find our receipts for our meals, so they refused any amount for one days meals. They sent us a belated check for a total of $104.84. There claim correspondence was degrading and insulting. This is a company that we had paid over $2,000.00 in premiums for our last three trips…..and they withheld any money whatsoever for our meals for one day because we had no receipts. We did have a bill for the day of the cruise showing $43.00 for meals, so we ask for that and they refused….consequently, we got nothing. Correspondences from them from the very beginning were insulting and degrading. I WILL NEVER USE THEM AGAIN.

I am very disappointed!!! I wonder how much the `editor` got for its A rating for this scum. I should have read the reviews first. I bought this crap just because i wanted to make sure i could cancel my trip anytime. No way.
They want proof of medical reason blablaba as if it is their business at all. I am very upset. Im gonna miss a very important meeting because of these scumbags.
NEVER DO BUSINESS WITH TRAVEL GUARD!!!!!!!!
