Sardinia is an autonomous island in the Mediterranean that is part of Italy. Sardinia has a rich history, picturesque landscapes, and beautiful Mediterranean beaches. The following examines Historic Sardinia, as well as Sardinia today.
Ancient & Pre-History
The ancient history of Sardinia includes the somewhat mysterious Nuraghi people. As early as 1500 BC these peoples were known for using bows to hunt. They built villages around conical towers many of which still exist today.
Medieval History
Medieval Sardinia was marked by religious and political strife. Islamic Armies already controlled Spain and were taking over Sicily. Benedictine Monks were proselytizing in Sardinia. Further different regions on the territory were at war for political reasons, especially given the outside pressures on the region.
Modern History
Since the end of World War II Sardinia has been part of Italy. The government of Sardinia is distinct and autonomous from Italy. Malaria, a major problem before the war, was successfully eradicated in Sardinia.

Though Sardinia is an island fishing and maritime industries are marginal. The more critical industries in Sardinia are agricultural especially citrus fruits and cheese production.
Government Today
The government of Sardinia is autonomous and ostensibly not interfered with by the Italian government. The recent movement of the G8 summit from Sardinia to L’Aguila provoked protests from Sardinians who felt that the Italian government had violated its status in moving the summit.
