The Hampton Court Palace is a magnificent palace that is located in the southwestern part of London, England. The last time the palace served as the residence of the British royal family was in the 18th century. One of the most famous residents of the palace was Henry VIII, who transformed it into one of the most sophisticated palaces in Europe. Today, it is one of the most visited tourist attractions in London.
The Hampton Court Palace was originally a manor, and it was acquired by the Knights of Hospitallers of St. John Jerusalem in the year 1236. The knights used the place to store their agricultural produce and keep their accounts. The manor was located very close to the Sheen and Byfleet royal palaces, and it was extended to accommodate guests who had connections with the royal family. In 1494, the manor became the residence of a courtier by the name of Giles Daubeney, who was later promoted to the position of Lord Chamberlain by King Henry VII.
In 1514, the Knights Hospitallers leased the manor to the Archbishop of York, Thomas Wolsey. Wolsey was on his way to become the Lord Chancellor of England, and he had a close relationship with Henry VIII, who had just become the new king. He added many luxurious chambers for his personal use, a splendid chapel, and the Base Court, which was used to provide lodgings for his guests. However, Wolsey lost favor with King Henry VIII later on, and the palace was acquired by the king.
King Henry VIII added more luxurious features to the palace, including the Great Hall, the Great House of Easement, a hunting park, pleasure gardens, bowling alleys, tennis courts, and others. When the reconstruction work was completed in 1540, Hampton Court Palace stood as one of the most magnificent palaces in all of Europe. King Henry VIII passed away in 1547, and his children, Edward, Mary, and Elizabeth became heirs to the throne, but they only used the palace as a country retreat. During the reign of King James I, the palace became a venue for theatrical and dance performances, and one of the famous playwrights who visited the palace was William Shakespeare. In 1645, the palace fell into the hands of Lord Protector Oliver Cromwell, who used it as a weekend retreat.
The next major
reconstruction of the palace took place during the reign of William III
and Mary II. The new King and Queen ordered for the royal suites to be
rebuilt, but the work was suspended a number of times because of a
construction accident, the European war, and Queen Mary II’s
death. The royal suites were finally completed during the reign of
Queen Anne, who was King William III’s sister-in-law. Queen
Anne was succeeded by King George I, and his son, George II, was the
last monarch who stayed in the palace. In 1838, Queen Victoria opened
the palace to the public.
Some of the
most beautiful features of the Hampton Court Palace are its gardens,
which include the Privy Garden, the 20th
Century Garden, the Great Fountain Garden, the Lower Orangery Exotics
Garden, and the Ponds Garden. The Privy Garden has a wide variety of
plants and sculptures that are arranged in a beautiful symmetrical
pattern, and it is the place where you will find the 240-year-old Great
Vine. One of the best places to relax in the palace is the 20th
Century Garden, which features an interesting variety of plants that
are planted with contemporary gardening methods. The Lower Orangery
Exotics Garden is a 17th
century garden that displays a wide range of exotic plants. Some of the
interesting things to see in the palace’s gardens are the
Maze and the tiltyard walls.
There are a number of exciting events that take place at the Hampton Court Palace every year, and one of them is the Hampton Court Palace Flower Show. This event is held from the 7th to 12th of July, and it features wonderful display of plants as well as gardening demonstrations.
