U.S. Consulate General Issues an Emergency Message for U.S. Citizens Traveling to Mexico

The U.S. Consulate General in Cuidad Juarez issued an emergency message to Americans in the state of Chihuahua indicating Mexican authorities have captured key members of the active drug cartels in Juarez. This success brings the potential for increased violence in the area.

In addition, information has been discovered suggesting a cartel may be targeting the U.S. Consulate or U.S. ports of entry into Mexico. In the past, the drug cartels have implemented car bomb attacks, so it is imperative that U.S. citizens remain vigilant.

If the Consulate receives information that indicates a credible threat accompanied by a specific time and location, that information will be immediately made available.

Americans residing in or traveling to Chihuahua are encouraged to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) and update their travel plans to receive up-to-date travel warnings issued by the U.S. Department of State. Back in April, 2011, the State Department issued a warning urging caution while traveling in Mexico.

While millions of U.S. citizens safely visit Mexico every year, the current situation of regular crime and violence along the border and near border crossings imposes serious risk.
